An organized closet is the first step to making 2017 your best dressed year. So before you head to the nearest shopping mall or boutique, it’s important to start with a clean slate. And a closet detox is just the thing you need to analyze what you have. Have any pieces that just need a quick fix (a button sewn, small alteration, etc.)? Have it tailored. Have any pieces that are just worn out? Toss em’. Notice you’re missing any basics? Make a list. And anything you haven’t worn in over a year? Get rid of it – donate it or sell it on Poshmark. Set aside an afternoon…or weekend, and go through each piece in your wardrobe. Anything that doesn’t make you feel confident and inspired - get rid of it.
2) Make an Inspiration Board
Personal style is an elusive idea that’s constantly evolving as we evolve. But at the end of the day, style is just a mix of preferences for certain colors, silhouettes, fabrics, and accessories - so, why not add some inspiration? After all that closet detoxing, put your feet up and comb through magazines and blogs for motivation. Create a Pinterest board to save all the images that you like, and pick out 3 of your favorite outfits. Analyze them for common elements. Do you tend to lean towards particular colors, cuts, and fabrics? There’s your personal style.
After you’ve gathered all your inspiration, its time to experiment. But it’s still not time to start shopping just yet. So if saving money is your New Year’s resolution for 2017, you’re still on track for reaching your goals! If you’re like most, you get used to wearing the same wardrobe pieces the same way, so start experimenting. Plus, there’s a difference between appreciating a style when you see it on someone else, and feeling comfortable wearing it yourself. So mix and match pieces in your closet, take a trip to the thrift store, go faux shopping to try on new pieces, or get together with friends for a clothing swap. A day of experimenting will help you to discover exactly how you like to wear things – so have fun!
4) Shop with Purpose
Now that you’ve detoxed your closet and fine-tuned your personal style for the New Year – it’s finally time to go shopping! Remember that list we made from the closet detox? Grab it. You’ve already made a list of basics, so now its just time to add pieces that would have the greatest effect on your ability to express your style. If you’re on a budget - no worries. Prioritize your list for key pieces that you can wear frequently that define your style, and shop for those first. And no matter how tempting the fiver bin at the winter sale may be – do not compromise on quality. Even if you have to buy less, it’s better to go with quality. That way, you can build a solid wardrobe that will last for years to come.
