Often misconceived as Mexico’s day of independence, The 5th of May is the day that an unlikely little army defended and defeated a well equipped invasion from the French in area of Puebla. Now celebrated more in the US than in Mexico, Americans have a good cause to celebrate the Battle of Puebla - besides the excuse of having great margaritas and Mexican food. At the time, the U.S. was in the middle of a Civil War, which meant a triumph of France over Mexico would've likely led to a swift French triumph over America. While France did eventually and successfully invade Mexico, it was short lived. And despite the previous Mexican-American war, a post Civil War America was in the position to be of assistance. So today, lets celebrate our ability to come together, and a people’s ability to be resilient in the face of adversity. Feliz Cinco de Mayo!
