INVITATIONS & THANK YOU CARDS:
Start the excitement with festive invitations. There are several great options for Moana theme invitations and thank you cards fromOriental Trading to personalized printables on Etsy. Just be sure to include the date, time and location of the party on your invite. Party invitations are also a great opportunity to ask if there are any special dietary concerns for your guests. Also, parents will need to know approximate pick up times, or if they are also to attend the party. And, asking for a RSVP via phone or email by a certain date will also help you plan the party. After the party, be sure to send out thank you cards in a timely manner with the givers name, and type of gift received. If your child is old enough, have them fill out the thank you and sign the card for a special added touch.
VENUE & DECOR:
Summer parties mean additional venue ideas from swimming pools, backyards, parks and beaches - in addition to the usual club house and community hall. Of course outdoor venues are a perfect choice for Moana theme birthday parties, but well decorated indoor spaces can transform the atmosphere for a party as well. Party City & Birthday Express are great sources with Moana theme banners, tablecloths, glasses, plates, napkins and balloons. If you're on a budget-friendly route, there's plenty of island and luau theme decor - mixed with a Moana theme banner & center pieces, you can get the look at a fraction of the cost. And for the DIY'ers little touches like bamboo placemats will add an extra Polynesian flair to the table. Add some bright & colorful leis & balloons, grass table covers and hibiscus streamers - and your guests will be transformed to Montuni.
"Whenever you're at a luau, you are 'ohana' — family." Before contact with the western world, Hawaiians called their important feasts an 'aha'aina' (‘aha' – gathering and ‘aina – meal). These grand feasts marked special occasions such as reaching a significant life milestone, victory at war, the launching of a new canoe or a great endeavor. They believed in celebrating these occasions with their friends and families. But when your little village chief is a picky eater, you need a simple gathering meal to appease both kids and adults alike. And luckily, there's a variety of traditional, yet easy bites that can fit both the party theme, as well as the picky palate of little eaters. Try Caramelized Maui Onion Dip and Garlic Ginger Chicken Wings for starters. Kalua Pork Sliders or Teriyaki Beef Sliders would make a great and easy main bite, with Sweet Potatoes or Potato Salad on the side. And just before the birthday cake, these Micky ear shaped Haupia (Coconut) Squares are bound to be a hit.
When it comes to hosting a children's birthday party, the key is to keep the kids entertained. And fortunately, there's a smorgasbord of ideas for children's entertainment from Pin the nose on Hei Hei,to Hula Hoop Contests and theme Piñatas. Aside from party games, live entertainment is another great way to wow little guests. You can take a cue from the Kardashians with a petting zoo with a pig. And with a live, interactive Polynesian show featuring hula dancers and fire performances, your adult guests are sure to be entertained as well. Another great idea for keeping both kids and the adults entertained are photo booths. With an island theme backdrop and fun props like coconut bras, tiki masks and parrots, everyone can have a fun little keepsake to take home. And they provide great photo opportunities with any entertainers you may book.
PASS THE COCONUT
Like the popular game of “hot potato,” but using a coconut, have everyone sit in a circle. Play Polynesian music or strum an ukulele while participants pass a coconut around. Stop the music and whoever is holding the coconut is “out.” Continue until there is one person left.
Grab the hula hoops for a fun hula contest. Award prizes for the longest hula run, or most creative hula hooping. (Who can go from their neck to their ankle without dropping it?).
How low can your guests go? Using a bamboo pole, or any long stick, have two people on opposite ends hold the stick up at various heights, starting from high and ending with low. Play your favorite Hawaiian music while participants try their luck at this back-bending classic.
